I love the city. It’s vibrant, exciting and open to opportunities. If you want to try the latest fitness craze, there’s a class for that. Bubble tea or matcha ice cream? No problem. Whatever you’re into, whether that be contemporary dance or post-modern punk, you’ll be able to find it somewhere in the city. But sometimes, just sometimes, you need to escape to appreciate what you have. And for me, that means jumping on a train and hitting the trails for a breath of fresh country air.
So when I heard about that the Salomon Sunset Series was coming to London, I thought what a great opportunity to play. Offering an afternoon of yoga, Indo board sessions (no, I hadn’t a clue what this was until I googled it and found out they were wobble boards), talks from the Salomon experts and more before you head out to run 10K as the sun sets, it’s the perfect event to introduce runners to the beauty of the trails and satisfy those who love running off the beaten track.
Well, it would be the perfect event for me, if I wasn’t away on 24 June when the London event happens in Dorking, Surrey. I’ll be taking on my own adventure in Italy.
Fortunately, I will be around when the Pop-up Shop comes to Southbank (16-19 June) offering talks about trail running, competitions and more.
Elsewhere in the country, the tour will be hitting Edinburgh next weekend (3 June), before coming to London on 24 June and then finishing in Bristol on 8 July.
Why should you sign up?
As they say, variety is the spice of life and trail running really does masses to improve your overall mental and physical health. You get to train a bunch of different muscles, improve your cardiovascular system and also become more in-tune with the countryside around you. Honestly, don’t just take my word for it. Sign up today.
In terms of gear, you may want to invest in trail shoes to give you more grip underfoot and prepare yourself for the weather. It’s also worth bearing in mind that you’ll not get a PB out of a trail run. What you will get, however, is an awesome view of the beautiful countryside as the sun sets. And there is nothing more relaxing than that.
