  • Ace-ing it with Maui Jim at Wimbledon

It’s not every day that you get to play tennis with a Wimbledon champion. But a few weeks ago I did just that. Yep, I feebly attempted to volley a ball back to the Women’s Wimbledon Champion 2017, Garbiñe Muguruza, at this year’s Maui Jim Tennis Clinic. And while I may not be a natural, well far from natural, in fact, a catastrophic player on the court, this two session taking place at Wimbledon highlighted that with a lot of practice on a few techniques and dedication, one day, I may actually be able to play an OK game of tennis.

    Warming up

    Get the skills

From serves to returning the ball, tennis is a really skilful sport. Nevertheless, I learnt that if I use two hands on a backhand, I’ll have more control. When serving, imagine drawing a figure of eight with your racket to give you the right power. And bouncing a tennis ball without a racket to a partner can help improve your agility and hand-eye coordination on the court.

They’ve got the skills (yes, it’s Hingis and Muruguza)

What I also picked up from the experts – (Patrick Mouratoglou, Martina Hingis and Dan Bloxham – what a lineup) – was to not be afraid of the ball. Be ready to take it head on when it is served to you. Whether I can remember to do this when I’m actually on the court is a completely different matter. The day was, however, really enjoyable despite my lack of skills.

    The goal is in sight?

For more than just a day of learning skills and feeling slightly nervous because I’m not a natural with a racket, the Maui Jim company also announced their new relationship with Optometry Giving Sight. This international charity aims to help people in poorer nations by providing basic eye services, training eye care personnel and establishing centres. As someone who relies on contact lenses and spectacles to get me through my daily life, I recognise how invaluable this type of care is. Over the next 12 months, for every pair of Maui Jim sunglasses sold at Maui Jim sporting events, they will help provide access to necessary eye test for children in need.

    Poser

So, if you’re looking for a new pair of shades, bear Maui Jim in mind. Not only will you find yourself with a good-looking and functional set of new sunnies but you’ll also be helping those who are less fortunate.

    As for the tennis

Well, I did feel more confident about playing tennis and got to meet some tennis superstars but, more importantly, I learnt about Maui Jim’s pledge to a very worthy cause.
