Daft Punk, The Returned and Populaire, you could say that France is having a bit of moment in the land of les rosbifs. And that includes the few French equivalent of the luxury end of our high street labels that seem to be popping up everywhere. If you’re a fan of the Parisian rock’n’roll chic look of The Kooples, then you’ll love the French labels Maje (pronounced a bit like Marge off of The Simpsons). Maje is by no means new in the UK and you can find the collection in Selfridges and on Net-A-Porter but what has really brought it to prominence is the face of the brand – yes, it’s none other than our very own hipster Alexa Chung.
Created by Judith Milgrom, the label Maje blends textures of her childhood – lace, embroidery and fabric – to produce garments that have a history and as such you’re happy to wear them season after season, year after year. You could almost say that Maje is label that captures the essence of French style. It’s not about wearing the hottest trend but building the ultimate capsule wardrobe, which you know suits you. Expect to find simple shapes, sharp detail and blazers that become staples- the kind of pieces that you’ll want to wear again and again because they are beautifully cut. If you’re after the kind of undone glamour of Carine Roitfeld, then head to Maje for your key pieces.
You only have to glance at this season’s collection to see the clever drapery that flatters the female silhouette. From jumpsuits like this dark khaki number to maxis and loose-fitted trousers with zip detailing, the soft lines and extra touches make certain pieces all the more covetable. I’m already lusting after this tuxedo-style white blazer, which I think works as pictured here with a flash of print and white trousers (and with most of my wardrobe). In fact, I think this blazer would keep on working for years and years as long as I keep it in tip-top condition. And that’s the thing about Maje – the clothes are pieces that you treasure.
