If the beginning of July 2015 weather should be remembered for anything, it’s the il scorchio temperatures and electrifying thunder storms. And this dramatic change does not only mean a change to your wardrobe but can also affect how you train. It’s tough to train during a #heatwave.
You have to keep on top of your fluids and don’t beat yourself up if you perform slightly less well than usual. As the ‘heat rule’ at Wimbledon demonstrates (umpires can currently suspend women’s play for 10 minutes when it gets too hot), the body can come under immense physiological strain when the temperatures rise and to continue playing well it has been recognised that players need a break and to keep their fluids topped up with fluids and electrolytes.
Even as we head towards slightly lower temperatures this week, you may be feeling exhausted (no one likes to sleep in a sauna). Thankfully, you can find salvation with a little help from Sweaty Betty’s latest campaign.
While it may not help physically in terms of training for a half marathon, #GetYourOmBack will restore your energy and peace of mind so at least you could sleep better and feel more positive towards your goal.
The basic premise of this month campaign is that you practise the daily yoga move as laid out on the card below. Snap a picture of yourself and post to Instagram mid-pose #GetYourOmBack to be in with a chance of winning a surprise prize. Of course, you don’t have to post to Instagram especially if, like me, you feel like a ungainly tight hippo when trying to get into the pigeon pose. It’s still useful to have the card to hand, printed out and stuck on your fridge to inspire you to stretch post-run.
And with free #GetYourOmBack restorative yoga classes taking place at various Sweaty Betty locations across the country on 12 July, the timing couldn’t be better. Make sure you get in quick when bookings open tomorrow (Monday 6 July). To find out more and watch yoga demonstrations, click on www.sweatybetty.com/get-your-om-back/
