It can be difficult to keep motivated when it’s cold and snowing outside but research published in January 2012 last year showed that both the cold and exercise can help boost weight loss.
Being cold can actually stimulate the production of brown fat. Before you get all worried by the mention of the word fat, brown fat cells are exactly what you need as it produces 300 times more heat than anything else body-wise by burning off those off calories. We are all born with brown fat and it is known to keep babies warm but as we age it tends to disappear. Anything we can do to get the brown fat going will help shift the pounds.
The scientists at the University of Sherbrooke, who were responsible for these findings, also found that exercise can switch-on these metabolic-boosting brown fat cells in the body.
In my mind and I’m by no means a scientist or doctor this means taking advantage of the wintery spell at the moment by going for a run.
Next time, I’ll offer some tips on how to run in the cold.
