As a seasoned runner who has owned many a pair of trainers in the past, including a few from Asics, I’m always on the lookout for a pair of new kicks. And not just to run in. You see – since it’s become acceptable to don casual footwear to work, I’ve been showing off my rainbow of shoes. From bright adidas boosts to plain white trainers (inspired by Phoebe Philo nonetheless), I am all about the flats. So when I heard about the launch of a new pair of fashion-led Asics trainers at a secret location in East London, thanks to JD Sports, I was intrigued.
For me, Asics had always been about running shoes. Asics are a good brand if you’re looking for city marathon shoes. The more fashionable side was always with Onitsuka Tiger, thanks to Uma Therman in Kill Bill. In fact, I’m the proud owner of not one but three versions of these classic leather-style plimsolls. I think you’re getting the picture that when it comes to shoes, I’m in the flattie corner.
So what was this Asics secret gig all about? And, more importantly, what was so special about these new trainers?
Let’s just say that when Asics put on a party, they really do go all out. There was food, a DJ, guests including AJ Tracey, Logan Sama, Melody Kane and Giggs (all part of the Grime scene) a bar and plenty of cool-looking people milling around the basement venue. I may not be part of the scene and the wrong side of 30 but I still appreciated the vibe as well as the video about the new Asics Chameleon.
Why Chameleon? Well, the shoes themselves are designed from a mesh which visibly changes colour from a bright green to a vivid pink as you move. And I have to say they look pretty cool. Don’t get me wrong, the Chameleon are not running trainers. I wouldn’t use them to train, mainly because I don’t want to damage. Instead, I just want to wear them casually with a grey t-shirt and pair of skinny black jeans when out and about at the weekend. Or with blue jeans and a plain black top to work.
Not only do they bring a flash of colour to your outfit, they are also super comfortable – which is always a bonus.
If you’re looking for casual footwear that you can wear all day and are looking to update your footwear, it’s worth checking the colour-changing Chameleons out.
Note to reader – I was invited to the Asics gig and gifted a pair of Chameleons which I genuinely do think are pretty cool and my colleagues would testify to my enthusiasm about them.
